GOVT TO PROVIDE RP90 BILLION YOUNG FISH SUBSIDY: MINISTER
Jakarta, Dec 16 (ANTARA) - The government will likely provide RP90 billion in young fish subsidy in 2009, Marine Recourses and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi said.
"The Rp90 billion young fish subsidy in 2009 increase three-folds if compared with the previous year subsidy which amounted to Rp33 billion only," he said after the harvest of 9.5 tons 'patin' fish in Subang, West Java, on Monday.
He said that the government provided the subsidy in order to create food resilience, food self-efficiency and to meet domestic demand for food.
"We are trying to provide young fish subsidy for farmers. We are also considering to provide some of the subsidy in the form of fish food to support them," the minister said.
Numberi said that the government also appealed businesses to take part in helping pond fish farmers so that the aim of the national fish cultivation program would be achieved.
The ministry of marine resources and fisheries is particularly considering providing small-scale fish farmers with fish food subsidy, he said.
"We will try to discuss with the president the diversion of the subsidy initially allocated for fuel oils to fish food subsidy," Minister Numberi said.
He hoped that the president would accept the proposal. After all, the government was willing to boost pond fish production in the country.***2***
