GOVT, ORGANDA AGREE TO LOWER TRANSPORTATION FARES
Jakarta, Dec 16 (ANTARA) - The government and the Organization of land Transportation Owners (Organda) agreed on Tuesday to lower transportation fares by three to six percent or by an average of five percent.
"The agreement to lower transportation fares was reached in our meeting with Organda and the Indonesian Consumers Institute Foundation (YLKI)," the director of land transportation affairs at the Transportation Ministry, Sudirman Lambali, told the press.
He said the agreement to lower transportation fares was made in response to the government's decision to cut the premium gasoline price from Rp5,500 per liter to Rp5,000 per liter and the diesel oil price from Rp5,500 per lieter to Rp 4,800 per liter.
Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said previously that public transportation fares in Jakarta could be lowered if the Transportation Service of the Jakarta Regional Government and Organda reached an agreement on the matter.
He told reporters at City Hall on Monday that the government's decision to cut the prices of premium gasoline and diesel oil could be followed by a lowering of transportation fares.
But there must an agreement first before the fares could be lowered, he said.
The governor said that on June 6, 2008, the Jakarta regional government fixed new tariff rates for public transportation in Jakarta after the city administation held an intensive dialog with Organda.
Since then, the tariff rates had been set among others at Rp2,500 for Kopaja mini buses, Rp3,000 for mikrolet 'mini' vans and Rp6,000 for air-conditioned buses.
