LEGISLATORS PROPOSE INQUIRY ON 2008 HAJJ PILGRIMAGE ORGANIZATION

Jakarta, Dec 16 (ANTARA) - A total of 121 House of Representatives (DPR) members have officially filed a proposal for an inquiry into the government's performance in organizing the hajj pilgrimage in 2008, House Speaker Agung Laksono said.

He said he received the proposal for the inquiry at the DPR building here on Tuesday. The proposal was submitted by its initiators, including Abdullah Azwar Anas of the National Awakening Party (PKB) faction.

Laksono said the DPR leadership would take follow-up steps on the proposal. The legislators were of the view that the organization of this year's hajj pilgrimage was worse than last year.

He said the number of legislators proposing the inquiry had exceeded the minimum required by regulations, namely at least 13 legislators from different factions.

The inquiry proposal was supported by the Golkar faction, PKB faction, the United Development Party (PPP) faction, National Mandate Party (PAN) faction, Prosperious Justice Party (PKS) faction, Reforms Star Party (PBR) faction and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) faction.

The initiators of the inquiry said the services rendered by the government during the hajj pilgrimage this year had disappointed hajj pilgrims due to, among other things, delays, expensive airline tickets, inappropriate accommodations and transportation services in Saudi Arabia.
