GARUDA NOW HAS DENPASAR-SHANGHAI DIRECT FLIGHTS
Denpasar, Bali, Dec 16 (ANTARA) - National flag-carrier Garuda Indonesia is scheduled for a Denpasar-Shanghai maiden flight on December 20, 2008 in anticipation of a boost in the number of passengers from China.
Garuda's General Manager in Denpasar, Bagus Y. Siregar said here Tuesday night that judging from the highly potential Chinese market share, it was time to develop it optimally.
"The opportunity had to be developed optimally to increase tourists from China to Bali. And the direct flight will considerably shorter their trip, because previously the tourists from China had to make a transit stop in Jakarta before proceeding to Bali," he said on the sidelines of a dinner with the participants of the China Mega Educational Tour 2008.
He added that the 150 participants came from Canton and Beijing, including tourist agents and journalists.
"During the three days until Saturday (Dec 20), we accompany them to visit tourist attractions and destinations in Bali, and promote the Garuda maiden flight. These activities are also expected to support the development of tourism in Pulau Seribu Pura," he said.
In the meantime, Garuda's GM in Shanghai Syamsuddin J. Souib said Chinese have a very high potential to go abroad for a holiday, especially to Bali, despite the current global financial crisis.
"On the other hand, the number of passengers that we have been flying from China to Bali has even increased significantly," he said.
Head of the Bali Tourism Office Gede Nurjaya also fully supported Garuda Indonesia's direct flight beteen China and Bali, as an Indonesian effort to boost the number of foreign tourists to Indonesia.
He said that in the 2006, 40,687 Chinese tourists had come to Bali, which was a 137.42 percent increase compared to those in 2005.
Up to October 2008, 105,356 Chinese tourists had come to Indonesia, and since 2004 Chinese tourists were included in the big-15, and in 2008 their number was the fifth biggest.
