GARUDA REOPENS YOGYAKARTA-SINGAPORE ROUTE

Jakarta, Dec 16 (ANTARA) - PT Garuda Indonesia reopens the Yogyakarta-Singapore route which will be served three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

"This is a form of support for promoting the economic and tourism potentials of Yogyakarta and Central Java as well as part of efforts to strengthen Garuda regional network," the company's chief spokesman, Pujobroto, said in a press statement here on Tuesday.
Welcoming the reopening of the route in Yogyakarta was tourism minister Jero Wacik, accompanied by Garuda's operations director Capt Ari Sapari and several local administration officials.
Pujobroto said the route would be served by B737-300 aircraft that has 110-seats consisting of 16 business and 94 economy class seats. The first plane to mark the reopening of the route departed from Singapore at 16.10 hours and arrived in Yogyakarta at 17.20 hours.
"From Yogyakarta the plane will depart again at 18.00 hours and will arrive in Singapore at 21.10 hours," he said.
Tourism minister Jero Wacik said the reopening of the route was expected to draw more foreign tourists to Yogyakarta.
"The direct Garuda flight from Yogyakarta to Singapore vice versa will certainly make the city more strategic in view of its wider access to other important cities in Southeast Asia," the minister said.
Ari Sapari meanwhile said the reopening of the Yogyakarta-Singapore route would strengthening Garuda Indonesia's position as an airline that has a wider regional network.
It also demonstrates Garuda's committment to connecting important cities in Indonesia with other main cities in Southeast Asia.
Based on Garuda's data potential passengers in the route will be around 29,000 in 2009. So far passengers from Yogyakarta to Singapore have to go through Jakarta so they take more time.
Garuda planes now fly from Yogyakarta to important cities in the country such as Jakarta nine times a day, Denpasar twice a day and Singapore three times a week.
From the Yogyakarta-Singapore route Garuda expects 80 percent in seat load factor and today's flight from Yogyakarta to Singapore was 95 percent full while its flight from Singapore to Yogyakarta 90 percent.
