FLOOD INUNDATES PIPITTEJA VILLAGE, W KALIMANTAN
Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Dec. 17 (ANTARA) - A flood reaching a height of between one and 1.5 meter, hit Pipitteja village, Teluk Keramat sub district, Sambas District, or 250 km north of Pontianak on Wednesday.
"The flood has been rising since in the morning following incessant rains since last night," Jar'in, a resident of Pangkalan Betung, Pipitteja village, said on the phone, Wednesday.
The floodwaters submerged hundreds of hectares of rice fields, rubber plantations, tens of houses, and two high school buildings, he said.
Despite the 50-cm high flood, students of state Junior High School (SMPN) 3 at Pimpinan were forced to take part in a mid-semester test in the inundated school building.
"The students are forced to take part in a mid semester examination although their class rooms are inundated as high as 30 - 50 cm," said Ridwan, an administrative staff of the school.
He hoped that the floodwaters would subside soon as the examination would continue until Saturday.
Pipitteja Village Head Andes said that his village was flooded almost every year.
So for, none of the residents evacuated themselves to higher ground, he said.
Indonesia is currently in the rainy season and a number of provinces including Aceh, East Java, South Kalimantan, West Java, and Central Sulawesi have experienced big floods due to the increased rainfall.
