TIDAL FLOODS STILL INUNDATING VILLAGES IN ACEH SINGKIL
Banda Aceh, Dec. 17 (ANTARA) - Tidal floods still inundated more than 10 villages in Singkil sub district, Aceh Singkil Districl, Aceh Province, forcing students to stay at home.
The tidal floods had hit villages in Aceh Singkil District since December 11, 2008, Masyithah, a resident of Singkil, said on the phone on Wednesday.
However, the despite the flooding, local residents decided not to flee their homes to higher ground, she said.
Among the worst-affected villages were Pulo Sarok, Pasar, Ujung, Kilangan, Kota Simboling, Teluk Ambon, Rantau Gedang, Teluk Rumbian, Pea Bumbung, Tangkal Pasir, Selok Aceh, Suka Makmur, Ujung Bawang, and Siti Ambia.
The water usually rose at 5 pm Western Indonesian Time (WIB) and subsided in the morning, she said.
The floodwaters submerged roads at a height of up to 30-50 cm, while houses at 30 cm.
Juliardin, another resident of Singkil, said local villagers predicted that the tidal floods would get worse on December 30, 2008, and therefore they began to evacuate their belongings to safer areas and they also planned to flee their homes on that date.
Meanwhile, Umar Bancin of the local social affairs office, said that a number of villages in Aceh Singkil were regularly hit by tidal food in every December after Aceh Province had been devastated by deadly tsunami on December 26, 2004.
