CLIMATE CHANGE HAVING NEGATIVE IMPACT ON IRRIGATION IN BALI

Denpasar, Indonesia, Dec 17 (ANTARA) - Climate change and weather irregularity are having a negative impact on irrigation systems in Bali, a local agricultural official said.

"Climate change and weather irregularity impact significantly on irrigation water availability in Bali," provincial agriculture office spokesman Ida Bagus Wisnu Wardana said here on Wednesday.

Speaking on the sidelines of a workshop on the Bali Action Plan to anticipate climate change and global warming, Ida Bagus said climate change had created long spells of drought which had impacted on agricultural commodity harvests.

On the other hand, in the rainy season, wide agricultural areas were inundated by flood waters causing harvest failures.

Ida Bagus said climate change had also influenced rainfall and had had a direct impact on the planting area and agricultural productivity.

He added that the ratio between water use and water availability in Bali was in critical condition, and the lack of irrigation water had resulted in a reduction in rice harvest area.

Ida Bagus said that besides water shortages, conversion of farmland into land for other purposes had increased to an alarming level in the past few years.

"Every year the function of at least 349 hectares of agricultural land is changed to become settlement areas and for other purposes," Ida Bagus said, adding that if the trend continued, around 17,245 hectares of rice filed would be turned into settlement areas.
