Sales of Samsung's smartphone 'Haptic' top 1 million
SEOUL, Dec. 18 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's second-largest handset maker, said Thursday that sales of its "Haptic" smartphones have surpassed a cumulative one million units.
Sales of the Haptic mobile phones have totaled about one million units since it
went on sale first in South Korea in March, the company said in a statement.
The South Korean market for smartphones is expected to heat up as the government
said last week it will abolish a barrier that requires mobile phones to be
equipped with home-grown mobile software called "WIPI" from next April.
SK Telecom Co., the nation's largest mobile-phone operator, already said it will
start selling the BlackBerry Bold smartphones by Research In Motion Ltd. of
Canada this month.
Other global heavyweights such as Nokia and Sony Ericsson are considering selling
their smartphones in South Korea in the wake of the rule change.
So far, the local market for mobile phones has been dominated by Samsung and its
rival LG Electronics Inc.
