Ruling party tables Korea-U.S. FTA amid collision with opposition

SEOUL, Dec. 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's ruling conservative party on Thursday unilaterally tabled a controversial free trade pact with Washington during a parliamentary session, fighting off violent protest from opposition lawmakers.

The South Korean parliament will begin to review the Korea-U.S. free trade
agreement (FTA), which has been shelved since June last year. The government
wants to ratify the deal before the end of this year.
Only 10 out of 29 parliamentary trade committee members were present and voted in
favor of putting the motion before the National Assembly as opposition
legislators were barred from entering the committee room.
The timing of the legislature's approval of the long-delayed trade pact has
turned into a source of intense political dispute here, especially after Democrat
Barack Obama, critical of the FTA, won the U.S. presidential election last month.
