HOUSE SPEAKER HOPES WOMAN TO LEAD PARLIAMENT ONE DAY
Jakarta, Dec. 18 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono has expressed hope that a woman would one day lead the parliament.
"There is now a discourse that later women should also be in the DPR's leadership structure and not just remain ordinary members," Laksono said here Wednesday in his remarks at the commemoration of Mother's Day which was marked by a bazaar, a discussion and an Indonesian food exhibition.
The Golkar Party politician admitted that the percentage of female legislators in the DPR was currently still low, namely below 30 percent.
Therefore, he hoped that in the general elections in 2009, the number of female legislators could increase and some of them could become DPR leaders.
Article 65 of the election law stipulates that at least 30 percent of any political party's slate should be filled by women.
The Mother's Day function was organized by the Women's Caucus in the Parliament (KPP).
The program also included a discussion themed "Improvement of Female Legislative Candidates in Developing Networking".
Among the speakers at the discussion were Eva Sundari (PDI-P), Latifah Iskandar (PAN), and Erni Anggraeni and Andriana Venny from the NGO Coalition.
