LANDSLIDE DESTROYS THREE BUILDINGS IN KEDIRI
Kediri, East Java, Dec. 18 (ANTARA) - A landslide destroyed three buildings at Jugo village, Mojo sub district, Kediri district, forcing tens of residents to flee to safer places late Wednesday.
The destroyed buildings were a meeting hall, a house and a shop, Kar, the owner of the collapsed house, said here on Thursday.
There were no casualties in the disaster but it caused the local community a material loss of millions of rupiahs, he said.
Incessant downpours falling in the hilly area on Wednesday afternoon until late at night loosened the bulk of a 75-meter-high hill, creating the landslide.
"When it happened, I and my family were at home. When we heard a loud noise, we immediately rushed out of the house to save ourselves," he said.
Some 45 residents living near the landslide-hit area decided to evacuate to safer areas because they feared more landslides would happen.
The landslide also buried a 75-meter-stretch of road, cut off land transportation and caused a power blackout.
"We have reported the disaster to the district administration, and for time being local residents will help clean up the mud," Eko Cahyono, Mojo sub district head, said.
