HOUSE PASSES SOCIAL WELFARE BILL INTO LAW

Jakarta, Dec 18 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) at a plenary session chaired by House Speaker Agung Laksono here on Thursday agreed to pass the Social Welfare bill into law.

The House plenary approved the bill after spokesmen of the House factions conveyed their final views on the bill, and then agreed that the draft be immediately passed into law.

Meanwhile, Social Services Minister Bachtiar Chamzah who was present at the House plenary session welcomed the session's decision to pass the bill into law.

Therefore, he said the government would soon issue stipulations to implement the new law.

The bill on social welfare is made up of 12 chapters and 60 articles/ After its passage into law, Law No.6/1974 on social welfare will no longer be valid.

Earlier, the government had proposed the revision of Law No.6/1974 because it was considered no longer relevant to social and national development at present.

In the new law, social welfare is defined as a conditon that must be created through the fulfillment of the people's material, spiritual, and social needs.

Based on the new law, the government would prepare manpower and volunteers who would be trained professionally to carry out their social tasks in social services.

The professional manpower in the field of social welfare would be employed at both private and government institutions.
