ALATAS' DEATH ALSO MOURNED BY INT'L COMMUNITY IN GENEVA

London, Dec 18 (ANTARA)- The death of Ali Alatas, Indonesia's former foreign affairs minister, was felt as a great loss by the international community in Geneva, an Indonesian diplomat in the Swiss capital said.

The sense of loss was expressed in the entries in a book of condolences opened at the office of Indonesia's Permanent Representative (PTRI) to the UN in Geneva, Yasmi Adriansyah, a first secretary at the office, said on Thursday.

The entries in the condolence book were made by foreign ambassadors and members of the international community in Geneva, Adriansyah said.
Alatas, Indonesian foreign minister in the 1988-1999 period and former ambassador to the United Nations and chief of PTRI in Geneva had left a good image with the international community in the region, Adriannsyah said.

A number of diplomats posted in Geneva unveiled their nice experiences in interactions with Alatas in international fora.

Singapore's permanent representative in Geneva, for instance, remembered Alatas as a wise, friendly and smiling figure.

The city state's ambassador also appreciated Alatas' efforts in strengthening Singapore-Indonesia relations and enhancing ASEAN integration.
The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) groups Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam.

The Australian ambassador in Geneva expressed deep grief over Alatas' death, saying that Alatas was an extraordinary foreign minister, who had created very good relations and worked for mutual benefit in the region , including betrween Australia and Indonesia.

The Australian people would always remember Alatas as a friend and partner, the envoy said.
In the meantime, the Cambodian ambassador cited Alatas' great contribution to the Cambodian peace process several years ago. Especially, the holding of the Jakarta Informal Meetings (JIM) was highly appreciated, he said.

The US deputy chief representative in Geneva mentioned Alatas' smartness and skill in diplomacy as well as his strong commitment to peace making.

The secretary general of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) expressed high appreciation for Alatas' significant contributions to interfaith dialogues and international political cooperation benefiting the world's civilization.

The UN Office in Geneva (UNOG) also conveyed deep sympathy to the government, the people of Indonesia and Alatas' family on his demise.

Alatas, whose last position was chairman of the Presidential Advisory Board, passed away at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore at 7:30 local time on Thursday last week.
