RI, PORTUGAL TO COOPERATE IN ARCHIVAL MATTERS
Jakarta, Dec 18 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Portugal have agreed to cooperate in archival and documentation matters relating to their historical relations, including information exchange, publication, and duplication of archives.
The cooperation would cover archives on the two countries' ties from the 16th to the 20th century, according to a press statement from the Indonesian embassy in Lisbon, Portugal, on Thursday/
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the cooperation was signed in the Portuguese capital on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 by Indonesian National Archives chief Djoko Utomo and Portugal's Director General of Archives, Silvestre Lacerda.
The cooperative activities would also include the holding of seminars, conferences, and workshops, exhibitions on the two counties' historical relations, heirloom heritages, and cultures.
The two parties agreed that archival cooperation would have a significant impact on the two countries' existence at present and in the future.
Meanwhile, Djoko Utomo said the MoU was a profitable partnership between the two countries with a long-standing historical and cultural relations.
Portuguese National Archives Director General Silvestre Lacerda said the MoU was a step forward in Indonesia-Portugal relations.
The objective of the archival cooperation between the two countries was to underscore the importance of their bilateral relations, especially in historical records of Indonesia and Portugal in the past and in the future.
In the past nine years, cooperation between Indonesia and Portugal in various fields such as politics, economy, social and cultural affairs had developed rapidly as a result of mutual understanding between their peoples.
