INFLATION TO DROP BELOW 11 PCT IF DEFLATION IN DECEMBER
Jakarta, Dec. 18 (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia (BI) has predicted that the inflation rate in 2008 would be below 11 percent if there was deflation in December this year.
"I think based on data, deflation in December 2008 is not something impossible. So, if it happens, this year's inflation rate will probably be slightly below 11 percent," BI Senior Deputy Governor Miranda S Goeltom said here on Wednesday.
Goeltom earlier estimated that Indonesia's inflation rate by the end of 2008 would stand at 11 percent or below 12 percent.
Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) reported that the inflation rate in November 2008 was 0.12 percent, the calender year's inflation rate in November 2008 was 11.10 percent, and the annual inflation rate in November 2008 was 11.68 percent.
The central bank's senior deputy governor said that although the country's economic growth was expected to slow down in 2009, the national economic condition would be better than that in other countries.
"We will see that our economy will go down in 2009, but it will still be much better than other countries," she said.
Bank Indonesia recently also predicted the rate of inflation in 2009 would be between 6.5 and 7.5 percent. The decreasing inflation pressure following the drop in the price of oil has made the bank optimistic that next year's inflation will be close to 6.5 percent.
