BEI INDEX DOWN IN EARLY TRADING THURSDAY

Jakarta, Dec. 18 (ANTARA) - The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) in the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) was closed lower in early trading on Thursday morning, on the weakening of the US and regional bourses.

The IHSG closed 21.457 points lower, to 1,342,527, and the LQ45 index plunged 5.324 points or 1.94 percent to 268.992.

Depreciated shares still dominated the market with 83 shares that lost, and only 27 that managed to advance, 37 which remained static, and 310 that were not actively traded.

Share transactions were recorded at 20,184, involving 533.828 million shares with a total value of Rp449.275 billion.

Bayu Aji, PT Panin capital research analyst, said the external factor of the US Wall Street and regional bourses' movement affected the BEI.

Dow Jones Industrial Average index in the Wall Street bourse plunged 99.80 points or 1.12 percent to 8,824.34 as investors were again concerned of the current global economic crisis, which has affected regional bourses including in Indonesia.

Several stocks in the Asian region fell early Thursday, among other things Hang Seng index in Hong Kong bourse which was depreciated 133.92 points (0.87 percent) to 15,326.58, the Straits Times index in Singapore stock market which tumbled 8.16 points (0.46 percent) to 1,771.13.

Among depreciated shares in the BEI were those of Bumi Resources which went down Rp50 to Rp860, Astra Internasional that fell Rp100 to Rp10,850, Telkom which tumbled Rp150 to Rp7,000, Bank BRI that nosedived Rp250 to Rp4,300, and Bukit Asam Coal Mining Company which were down Rp300 to Rp7,050.

Meanwhile, the rupiah advanced against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market on Thursday morning, on continuous positive sentiments.

The rupiah was trading at Rp10,900/11,050 per US dollar, up 50 points from Rp10,950/Rp11,050 in the market closing a day earlier.
