RUPIAH LOWER 25 POINTS LATE THURSDAY

Jakarta, Dec. 18 (ANTARA) - The rupiah weakened against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market on Thursday afternoon after strengthening for three consecutive days earlier.

The Indonesian currency was trading at Rp10,975/11,025, down 25 points from Rp10,950/11,005 per US dollar in the earlier market close.

President Director of PT Financorpindo Edwin Sinaga said here on Thursday that the rupiah depreciation was normal, after it had surged significantly as the US dollar tumbled in the global markets.

Market players released the rupiahs for profit taking, he said. However, he considered the release of the rupiah was relatively small.

He also viewed that the position of the rupiah at the level of below Rp11,000 per US dollar was still good.

"We predict the rupiah still has a chance to advance again because the greenback tended to weaken against main Asian currencies," he said.

The rupiah advanced against the US dollar in the early trading on Thursday morning, as it was trading at Rp10,900/11,050 per US dollar, up 50 points from Rp10,950/Rp11,050 in the market closing a day earlier.

It showed that the market activities were still uncertain, despite a tendency of the US dollar slumping down in the global market, he said.

Bank Indonesia (BI) continued to supervise the movement of the greenback especially in foreign banks, he said.
