GOVT TO SOLIDIFY TNI-POLRI RELATIONS IN VIEW OF TERROR THREAT

Jakarta, Dec 18 (ANTARA) - The government is to solidify the relations between the National Defense Forces (TNI) and the National Police (Polri) to make them more prepared to deal with terrorist activity like what happened in Mumbai, India recently, a spokesman said.

"There are several options whether Polri should be in the forefront in enforcing the law, or the TNI together with Polri should anticipate and overcome the threat," Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said here on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters after attending a national seminar on human rights and national defense, Juwono said Indonesia should learn a lot from the Mumbai incident in India, especially in the TNI-Polri coordination and the accuracy of both military and police intelligence information.

"We do not want something like the incident in Mumbai to happen in Indonesia. Therefore, there should be anticipatory easures by both the TNI and Polri," Juwono said, adding that security in such places as hotels and shopping malls which were frequently visited by foreigners should be tightened.

On the occasion, Army Strategic Reserves Command (Kostrad) Chief Lt Gen George Toisutta said the threat of terrorism had changed in pattern so the ways in anticipating terrorist activity should also be altered.

"The threat of terrorism has relatively escalated but their operational system has shifted from car bombings or suicide bombings to other methods. Therefore, the pattern of our anticipation should also change," Toisutta said.
