KOREA LAYS OFF 300 RI WORKERS DUE TO FINANCIAL CRISIS

Mataram, Indonesia, Dec. 18 (ANTARA) - At least 300 Indonesian migrant workers have been laid off in Korea due to the current global financial crisis.

Most of the laid-off workers worked in the manufacturing sector, Moh Jumhur Hidayat, head of the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI), said here on Wednesday.

"More Indonesian workers might be laid off in Korea because companies in the manufacturing sector which target Europe as their market were forced to cut the number of their workers because of the global crisis," he said.

Jumhur Hidayat said that he would try to convince South Korea not to return them to Indonesia, but to help them find jobs in other sectors, such as the construction and agriculture sectors.

"For that purpose, I ask the Indonesian embassy in South Korea to form a team which could make data on the laid-off workers to seek for jobs in other sectors," he said.

He said the number of Indonesian workers in South Korea was 1,214 people in 2006, and increased to 4,309 in 2007 and around 12,000 in 2008.

Hidayat had no information of lay-offs in Malaysia, but he was sure that Malaysia still needed Indonesian migrant workers to work in oilpalm plantations.
