PRESIDENT CALLS FOR CONTINUING AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS
Jakarta, Dec 18 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono reiterated the importance of continuing efforts to develop the country's agricultural sector in order gradually to achieve self-sufficiency in rice, corn, soybean, meat, sugar and other foodstuffs.
He made the statement when presenting awards to provincial governors, district heads, mayors, researchers as well as community members who were considered to have made outstanding contributions to national food resilience.
"I am convinced that with a good plan, a good program and good implementation the results will be good. As all parties have understood the challenges that we are facing, let us jointly carry them out," he said at the presidential palace.
President Yudhoyono said in the next five years Indonesia would be able to be self-sufficient in soybean, sugar and cow meat so that it would no longer be dependent on imports for the commodities.
In that respect he emphasized the importance of maintaining development in the agricultural sector and it was the obligation of good leaders in the central as well as local administrations to continue existing pioneer programs.
President Yudhoyono on the occasion referred to China's achievements in the past 30 years of reform as a reference for the country to follow.
He said he was impressed by the transition of leadership in that country that had gone smoothly as well as continuation of development programs in that country that had made it able to achieve remarkable successes this year including the implementation of the Olympic Games.
