PRESIDENT ASKS PRAMUKA TO BE PART OF NATIONAL CHARACTER FORMATION
Jakarta, Dec 18 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has said Gerakan Pramuka or the National Scouting Organization of Indonesia should be part of national character formation effort within the younger generation through a revitalization of the organization.
The president made the statement when he received the participants of the Scout Movement's National Congress 2008 at the State Palace here on Thursday.
"We have to create the revitalization and measure its progress annually in an effort to make the activity of Gerakan Pramuka (The Scouting Movement) relevant," President Yudhoyono said.
He added that with the revitalization, the Scouting Movement could encourage the formation of national character.
"Our nation should be superior with high competitive power and good character, and therefore the human resources quality should be improved through good education," Yudhoyono said.
According to the head of state, the Scouting Movement should be a vehicle to attain good national character and leadership education.
"Pramuka has no need to be like a formal educational institution but should focus its attention to two important factors, namely the character building and leadership education," he said.
The president said a lot of people at present did not have good understanding about science and technology, and consequently they easily gave up when facing difficult problem.
"Character education is necessary. We do not want our younger generation to be dull and easy to give up when they face difficult problem," the president said.
However, he admitted that leadership education and character building took time because it was part of life-long education.
"Pramuka should be part of the solution to our problem, and I want it to remain having high spirit. Technology is important indeed but Pramuka's effort in leadership education and character building is more important," Yudhoyono said.
