DPR: NATIONAL SHIPS SHOULD BE GIVEN PRIORITY

Jakarta, Dec 18 (ANTARA) - Some members of Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR)that national ships should have a piority for domestic commodity shipments in the current current global financial crisis.

"It is a pitty that there are some agreements ignoring the use of national ships," said Abdul Hakim, a member of Commission V, said here Thursday, when asked to comment on the granting of a special dispensation by the transportation ministry for the operation of four foreign ships to carry coal in Indonesia.
The four foreign vessels with a permit to ship coal are MV Good Friend with 62,000 tons of coal from Balikpapan to Suralaya, MV Dubai Night with 50,000 tons from PT. Arutmin from Batulicin to Sibolka, MV Commando with 32,000 tons of coal from South Kalimantan to Suralaya, and TB Kingfisher 808 by teaming with domestic coal barges.
Therefore, he called on the transportation ministry to immediately make an inventory of national ships which should be given priority in the current global financial crisis.

"The decision is deplorable, especially that the cargo is for state owned companies," Hakim said.

Sharing similar view with Hakim was Yosef A Nae Soi of the Golkar party faction in the House who urged the government to make an inventory of national vessels that could be used to carry coal for domestic destinations.

According to him, under Law No 17/2000 on shipment and presidential instruction No 5/2005 on empowerment of national shipping industry, it is clear enough that priority needs to be given to local vessels.
In the two regulations, foreign vessels will be granted a dispensation if no national vessel is available.
