RI TO CONDUCT ANTI-TERROR EXERCISE IN MALACCA STRAIT
Jakarta, Dec 18 (ANTARA) - Indonesia plans to stage an anti-terror exercise in the Malacca Strait in anticipation of various sea security disruptions, particularly terrorism.
Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Widodo AS said here on Thursday the exercise to be done in the Malacca Strait was a form of care Indonesia would show as a littoral country on the security of the world's busiest waterway.
"Security in the Malacca Strait is very important not only for Singapore and Malaysia but also Indonesia as one of the littoral countries especially with regard to piracy threats," he said.
The exercise would be part of the army-police joint exercise in overcoming terrorist threats on land, air and in the sea carried out from December 19 to 22, 2008.
Besides the exercise in the Malacca Strait that would involve around 10,000 personnel the army and the police also staged a simultanous exercise in Hotel Borobudur, Hotel Sultan, the Tanjung Priok seaport, the Halim Perdanakusumah airport and the Indonesia Stock Exchange building.
The army-police joint anti-terror exercise was also part of efforts to give a sense of security to all citizens in the country aa well as foreigners visiting or living in the country.
Widodo said the exercise was also aimed at creating security stability to support the implementation of the general elections in 2009 as well as economic stability in the midst of current global financial crisis.
The commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI), General Djoko Santoso, said the anti-terror exercise in the Malacca Strait would involve personnel from the Riau police command, the Bukit Barisan I Military Command, the West Fleet and the Air Forces Operations Command I (Koopsau).
"According to the scenario a tanker from a certain country is being pirated in the Malacca Strait. To deal with it, an airplance from the Koopsau I will first conduct an observation and the result of which will be given to the Riau regional police command and the Bukit Barisan Military Command as well as the Western Naval Fleet to be followed up," he said.
After the situation is clear, Djoko said, a special force will be sent to conduct release and evacuation operations.
