GOVT TO ALLOCATE RP289 BILLION FOR TOURISM PROMOTION IN 2009

Jakarta, Dec 18 (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Culture and Tourism is allocating Rp289 billion for tourism promotion in the country in 2009, a senior official said.

"The Rp289 billion promotion fund for 2009 is 10 percent bigger than that of 2008. The total budget for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism is set at Rp1.1 trillion for 2009," director general for marketing affairs of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Sapta Nirwandar said here on Thursday.

When asked whether the fund was enough for tourism promotion in the country, the director general said if the World Tourism Organization of the United Nations (UN WTO)'s standard was taken into account, the country would need some US$100 million for its tourism promotion.

Based on the UN WTO standard, about US$10 is needed for a promotion fund to invite one foreign visitor to the country.

The number of expected foreign tourist arrivals in the country in 2008 is 6.5 million with an expected foreign exchange earning of US$7.1 billion.

The director general said that the cabinet meeting in October revised the foreign tourist arrival target from 8 million to 6.8 million.

Previously, Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Wardiyatmo has proposed a promotion fund of Rp340 billion.

"We have proposed a tourism promotion fund of Rp340 billion for 2009," he said on November 13, 2008.

He said that the proposed amount of promotion fund increased two-folds if compared with the fund allocated a year earlier which stood at Rp150 billion.

The promotion fund of Rp340 billion will also be used to promote the Visit Indonesia Year 2009, he said. The VIY 2009 is the continuation of the VIY 2008.

Wardiyatmo said that Indonesia's tourism promotion fund was far smaller than that of Malaysia which reached US$100 million in 2008.

The country's tourism promotion fund was only Rp900 billion in 2007 and Rp751 billion in 2006.
