TNI, POLICE BEGIN ANTI-TERROR EXERCISE

Jakarta, Dec. 19 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Defense Force (TNI) and the National Police (Polri) began a simultaneous anti-terror exercise in several Indonesian big cities on Friday.

National Police Chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri officially kicked off the joint exercise in a ceremony attended among others by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Widodo AS, Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono, TNI Chief General Djoko Santoso, Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto, and State Administrative Affairs Minister Taufik Effendi.

The exercise would involve 6,507 personnel in the fields and 350 others in command posts, according to Commissioner General Iman Haryatna, director of the joint exercise between TNI and Polri.

"The exercise in command posts will start today, Friday (Dec. 19), while the field exercise will be conducted on Sunday, December 21, 2008," he said.

The field exercise will be carried out in Malacca Straits, Jakarta, Semarang (Central Java), Yogyakarta, Surabaya (East Java), and Denpasar (Bali).

General Danuri said that the joint exercise was meant at protecting the people from terror threats.

"Terror does not only claim many lives but also cause prolonged trauma and negative impacts on various aspects of life," he said.

The Police and TNI would never let terror haunt and threaten the people's life, he said.

Some terrorist attacks such as the Bali Bombing I, the bomb attack in the Australian embassy in Jakarta, and the latest Mumbai terrorist attack in India, showed that terrorist attacks could happen anytime, he said.

"Terror threats can occur anytime and anywhere. We don't want that to happen," he said.

The joint exercise was also to demonstrate that TNI and Polri would not compromise any terrorism action, he stated.
In Jakarta, the exercise will be held at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI), two hotels, the Halim Perdana Kusuma air force base, and Tanjung Priok Harbor.

In Semarang, the exercise will be conducted in the telecommunication building, and in two hotels, while in Yogyakarta will be in a hotel, in Surabaya in three hotels, and in Denpasar in two hotels and one cafe.

The joint exercise will officially end on Monday, December 22, 2008, at the Halim Perdana Kusuma air force base, eastern Jakarta.
