THREE SUKHOI JET FIGHTERS TO ARRIVE IN INDONESIA SOON

Jakarta, Dec 19 (ANTARA) - After several times of delay, three Russian-made Sukhoi jet-fighters from Russia will soon arrive in the country to reinforce the Indonesian Air Force, a defense official said.

Defense Equipment Director General Rear Marshall Eris Harryanto said here on Friday that the three Sukhois would arrive in stages, two this month and one in January 2008.

"The three warplanes belong to the SU-30MK2 type. The Indonesian Air Force needs this type," Harryanto, who has just returned from Russia to witness the roll-out of the two Sukhois, said.

He said that the procurement of the three jet-planes would soon be followed with the procurement of armaments needed by the Indonesian Air Force. "Thus the operational preparedness of the Air Force, particularly the Sukhoi squadron, could be increased soon," he added.

The Russian Sukhoi producing company on August 21, 2007, announced the sale of six jet fighters to Indonesia worth US$300 million.

The six Sukhois consisted of three Sukhoi SU-30MK2 type and three SU-27SKM type. They will reinforce the Air Force's Sukhoi fleet it already has since September 2003.

The memorandum of understanding on the purchase of the six Sukhois was signed on August 21, 2007. They will replace A-4 Skyhawks based in Air Squadron 11, in Makassar's (South Sulawesi) Sultan Hasanuddin airbase.

The purchase of the Russian made Sukhois has been planned based on the Air Force's Fleet Development Program for 2005-2009.

In the 2005 budget year, funds totaling US$310 million had been allocated for the procurement of six Sukhois. The procurement of the six warplanes will be conducted in stages in the 2007-2009 period.

Currently the air force already has four Sukhois consisting of two SU-27s and two MK-30s. Called Flanker, the jet-fighter is of the Sukhoi Su-27 SK Upgrade type, equipped with a couple of Lyulka AL-31F engines with booster strength of 12,550 kg each.
