GOVT ASKED TO FOLLOW MALAYSIA`S OIL CONSUMPTION RESTRICTION
Jakarta, Dec 19 (ANTARA) - A scientist of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI)has advised the government to follow Malaysia's step in restricting its natural oil exploitation.
"Malaysia restricts its oil exploitation to about 630,000 barrels per day and gas consumption to 32,000 million standard cubic feet per day," Nur Aisyah K said here on Thursday.
Besides, Malaysia whose oil reserves are expected to finish in 12 years, also reduces its dependence on oil consumption.
As a result, Malaysia's oil consumption could be reduced from 71.4 percent in 1990 to 53.1 percent in 2000 and 6 percent in 2003, she said.
To replace the use of natural oil, Malaysia developed and increased the use of alternative resources, particularly gas and coal.
The use of natural gas increased from 15.7 percent in 1990 to 71 percent in 2003 and the use of coal from 7.6 percent in 1990 to 11.9 percent in 2003, she said.
