BEI INDEX DROPS 0.69 PERCENT EARLY FRIDAY

Jakarta, Dec. 19 (ANTARA) - The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) in the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) was closed lower in early trading on Friday morning on a weakening of the US and regional bourses.

The IHSG closed 9.357 points lower at 1,342,407, and the LQ45 index plunged 2.405 points or 0.89 percent to 268.086.

Depreciated shares still dominated the market with 68 shares that lost, and 53 that managed to advance, 54 which remained static, and 282 that were not actively traded.

Share transactions were recorded at 33,724, involving 1.075 million shares with a total value of Rp747.782 billion.

PT Danareksa Sekuritas, in its daily research analysis, said the BEI index was under pressure by profit taking, following a trend in the the US Wall Street and regional bourses.

Dow Jones Industrial Average index in the Wall Street bourse plunged 219.34 points or 2.49 percent to 8,604.99 on Thursday evening, and the trend was followed by bourses in the Asian region, including Indonesia.

Several stocks in the Asian region fell early Friday, among other things Hang Seng index in Hong Kong bourse which was depreciated 119.79 points (0.77 percent) to 15,378.01, the Nikkei-225 index in Tokyo stock market which tumbled 35.10 points (2.12 percent) to 8,632.12.

Among depreciated shares in the BEI were those of Bumi Resources which went down Rp40 to Rp850, State Gas Company that fell Rp200 to Rp2,000, Antan mining company which tumbled Rp50 to Rp2,075, Bank Mandiri that nosedived Rp50 to Rp2,075, and Bukit Asam Coal Mining Company which were down Rp300 to Rp7,050.

Meanwhile, the rupiah advanced against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market on Friday morning as market players again bought the local currency.

The rupiah was trading at Rp10,920/11,000 per US dollar, up 30 points from Rp10,950/11,050 per dollar from the earlier market's close.
