POLICE STILL MAIN LAW ENFORCERS AGAINST TERRORISTS, MINISTER SAYS
Jakarta, Dec 19 (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Widodo AS has asserted that the Police would remain functioning as law enforcer against terrorist acts with the support of the National Defense Forces (TNI).
Widodo made the statement before inspecting the command post of the TNI-Police joint anti-terror exercise at the National Police Headquarters here on Friday.
"Law enforcement aspect in dealing with terrorists is in the hands of the police, and I think it has been done well," Widodo said, adding that TNI would support the Police.
Widodo said various acts of terrorism in Indonesia and other parts of the world including Mumbai, India, should give a lesson to the government to make an anti-terror operation plan by the police and TNI.
The management of the terrorist act in Mumbai which claimed hundreds of lives should prompt TNI personnel to join the eradication of terrorism.
"In the Mumbai carnage , the police took action with the support of the military," Widodo said.
Therefore, he said the government was arranging a procedure and mechanism of anti-terror management for the two institutinos.
In relation to the joint TNI-Police anti-terror exercise in several Indonesia major cities on Friday, Widodo said it was part of the government's obligation to ensure security and safety for all people across the country including foreigners.
The joint TNI-Police anti-terror exercise was officially kicked off by National Police Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri in a ceremony attended among others by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Widodo AS, Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono, TNI Chief General Djoko Santoso, Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto, and State Administrative Affairs Minister Taufik Effendi.
The exercise would involve 6,507 personnel in the field and 350 others in command posts, according to Commissioner General Iman Haryatna, director of the joint exercise between TNI and Police.
"The exercise at the command posts will start today, Friday (Dec. 19), while the field exercise will be conducted on Sunday, December 21, 2008," he said.
The field exercise will be carried out in the Malacca Strait, Jakarta, Semarang (Central Java), Yogyakarta, Surabaya (East Java), and Denpasar (Bali).
