EPG INDONESIA TO CONSULT PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO

Jakarta, Dec 20 (ANTARA) - Indonesia's representatives in the Indonesian-Malaysian Eminent Persons Group (EPG) will soon consult President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on appointing a replacement for EPG member Ali Alatas who passed away recently.

"After an EPG meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on December 22-23, EPG Indonesia will consult President Yudhoyono on the appointment of a noted diplomat to replace the late Ali Alatas as an EPG member," EPG Indonesia spokesman Musni Umar said here on Friday.
Musni said EPG Indonesia chairman Try Sutrisno deemed it urgent to immediately fill the position left vacant by Ali Alatas.
"Therefore, we will choose a noted diplomat to fill the vacancy after receiving directives from President Yudhoyono," Musni said.
Musni admitted that it was not easy to find a diplomat of the same caliber as Ali Alatas who was well-known around the world and had an international reputation in diplomacy.
But EPG spokesman was certain that there must be another Indonesian diplomat whose capability in international diplomacy was close to Alatas' who passed away at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on December 11, 2008.
The Indonesia-Malaysia EPG which was formed on July 7, 2008 to advise the two governments on how to solve sensitive issues involving the two countries, held its maiden meeting on Aug 29-30 this year.
The formation of Indonesia-Malaysia EPG was based on an agreement reached at a meeting between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at Putrajaya, Malaysia, on Jan 11, 2008.
The Indonesian EPG members are Try Sutrisno, Ali Alatas, Quraish Shihab, Des Alwi, Musni Umar, Pudentia MPSS and Wahyuni Bahar while the Malaysian members are Tun Musa Hitam, Tan Sri Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin, Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim, Tan Sri Abdul Halim Ali, Tan Sri Amar Hamid Bugo, Datuk Syed Ali Tawfik Al-Attas and Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
