SINGER ELLY KASIM NAMED W SUMATRA'S CULTURE, TOURISM FIGURE
Padang, W Sumatra, Dec 20 (ANTARA)- The West Sumatra Tourism Award 2008 jury has chosen senior female singer Elly Kasim (64) as the province's culture and tourism figure for this year.
"Elly Kasim is a living legend in the artist world in West Sumatra as well as in Indonesia. She deserves to the award due to her dedication to the promotion and improvement of Minang songs and culture for nearly 40 years," West Sumatra Vice Governor Marlis Rahman told ANTARA here on Saturday.
At the West Sumatra Tourism Award 2008 function on Friday (Dec 19) night, Marlis handed the golden "Bundo Kanduang" (noted Minang female figure) trophy as a Lifetime Achievement Award to Elly Kasim.
Minang is short for Minangkabau, the vernacular name of West Sumatra or the ethnic people of the region.
The West Sumatra Tourism Award has been issued annually since 2006 by the local tourism journalist forum in cooperation with the provincial culture and tourism office, Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI), travel bureau association (Asita) and Indonesian guides association (HPI).
Elly Kasim was chosen for her dedication to the art of singing, the presentation of Minang songs in particular. She has launched more than 100 albums since 1961. Some of her songs gained popularity at home and ovserseas, including one titled "Ayam den Lapeh (I lost my chicken)".
In addition, Elly with her Minang traditional dance group had also been promoting the region's traditional arts in 20 foreign countries.
In addition to Ayam den Lapeh, other popular Elly Kasim songs are Bareh Solok, Kaparinyo, Si Nona, Lamang Tapai, Dayuang Palinggam, Kelok Sembilan, Roda Padati, and Mudiak Arau.
Recently Elly Kasim launched her 100th album in Jakarta at a function which was also attended by some national figures like Agum Gumelar (former transportation minister), Prof. Emil Salim (former environment minister), Titiek Puspa (senior female singer), Tantowi Yahya (presnter), Ernie Johan (senior Minang's female singer), Dharma Oratmangun, and Deddy Dores.
All of them expressed their appreciation for Elly's achievement and called her the "Queen of Minang songs".
"Elly has been popularizing and preserving Minang songs for a long time.So she deserves to be called the Queen of Minang songs," Emil Salim said.
