RI-US RED CROSS DISASTER RISK REDUCTION CAMPAIGN IN ACEH

Banda Aceh, Dec 20 (ANTARA) - The United States Red Cross and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) have launched a campaign to increase the Aceh people's awareness about the risks of natural disasters risks during a "Tusnami Week" starting Satuday (Dec 20).

"The campaign aims to increase the commnity's awareness about the need to reduce the risks of disasters," Taherul Islam Khan of the American Red Cross said.

Hundreds of students from the target areas of the Integrated Community-based Risk Reduction (ICBRR) program are participating in a writing and poster making competition.

"The students' works deliver the important message of keeping alert to disasters. The winning poster will be used to lessen the disaster risk in the Aceh community," he said.

Besides the writing and poster-making competition, some 300 Community Based Action Team (CBAT) members would gather to create greater opporunities to share knowledge and ability among the volinteers trained under the ICBRR program, Khan said.

The participants of the event would also plant trees to reduce environmental damage which is also a disaster risk factor.

They would also take part in an emergency reaction training.

The Tsunami Week event would last for a week starting Saturday, December 20, 2008.
