WHIRLWIND HITS THREE VILLAGES IN INDONESIA
Sumenep, Dec 20 (ANTARA) - A whirlwind swept through the villages of Meddelan, Cangkreng, and Pore in Sumenep district on Madura island, Indonesia, on Friday night, Sumenep police spokesman Inspector-I Imam Subechi said here on Saturday.
He made the statement after visiting Pore, one of the villages hit by the whirlwind.
"The whirlwind swept through Pore, Meddelan, and Cangkreng villages, hitting and dislodging roof tiles on local people's houses," Imam said.
He added Cangkreng village bore the brunt of the whirlwind.
"Cangkreng village was heavily hit by the whirlwind which destroyed 16 houses, and two mosques there in addition to 12 houses in Pore village and two houses in Meddelan viallge," Imam Subechi said.
He said dozens of houses in the three villages were lightly damaged but there were no reports of casualties.
"We are still in the field to collect data about the material damage and I am certain there was no fatality in the disaster," he said.
According to Wikipedia, a whirlwind is a weather phenomenon in which a vortex of wind, a vertically oriented rotating column of air, forms, due to instabilities and turbulence created by heating and flow (current) gradients. Whirlwinds can be seen all over the world and in any season.
Whirlwinds are subdivided into two main types, the great or major whirlwinds and the lesser or minor ones.
The first category includes tornadoes, waterspouts, and land spouts.
The range of atmospheric cortices constitute a continuum and hard boundaries are artificial nomenclature and not necessarily representative of physical reality.
Some lesser whirlwinds may sometimes form in a similar manner to greater whirlwinds with related increase in intensity.
These intermediaries include the gustnado and the fire whirl. Other lesser whirlwinds include dust devils, as well as steam devils, snow devils, debris devils and shear eddies such as the mountainado and eddy whirlwinds.
