VP INSTRUCTS S KALIMANTAN GOVERNOR TO BUILD COAL TERMINAL
Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan, Dec 20 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has ordered PT Pelindo III and South Kalimantan Governor Rudy Arifin to build a coal terminal separate from the province's container terminal.
"Build a separate, special coal terminal. Don't mix coal port with container port activities," the vice president said when he inspected Trisakti Port in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan province, on Saturday.
Kalla issued the order after seeing a mound of coal at the container terminal.
He said a special coal port should also be immediately built in South Kalimantan to speed up the handling of coal to be shipped out.
"Build a good coal terminal and also build a good container terminal separately," Kalla told Governor Rudy Arifin and PT Pelindo III officials.
In his inspection to Trisakti Port, the vice president said the task of PT Pelindo was to build a port facility in addition to carrying out its administrative functions.
Earlier, Governor Rudy Arifin reported to the vice president that coal product in South Kalimantan could reach 2.7 million tons per year, and the figure could continue to increase.
In response to the governor's report, the vice president said the export of coal and other mineral products should be covered by Letters of Credit (LCs) to make it easier for all parties concerned to control the transactions.
"In future, all coal and other mineral product exports should be covered by LCs in order to make it easier to check whether all the tax, royalty and other obligations have been met," the vice president said.
According to the vice president, the government had found it difficult so far to control how much coal has been exported and how much the tax and royalty had to be paid by the exporters.
"We don't care we have run out of coal because of smuggling," Kalla said.
On the occasion he also asked the Forestry Ministry to keep on preserving forests by not too easily giving mining permits to mining companies whose activities would destroy forests.***2***
