GOVT TO PROPOSE BILL ON FINANCIAL SYSTEM SAFETY NET
Jakarta, Dec. 20 (ANTARA) - The government plans to propose a bill on Financial System Safety Net to the House of Representatives (DPR) in the second week of January 2009.
"The government will propose a bill on the Financial System Safety Net with a submission target in the second week of January 2009," Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said here on Friday evening after the conclusion of a crisis simulation exercise for Indonesia.
The DPR has rejected a proposed government regulation in lieu of the Law No. 4/2008 on the Financial System Safety Net.
Therefore, in response to the matter, the government with related institutions such as Bank Indonesia (BI), the Deposit Guarantor Institute, and the Capital Market and Financial Institutions Supervisory Board (Bapepam) have made a number of preparations including the crisis handling simulation, according to the finance minister.
"The simulation is aimed at finding shortcomings in crisis handling in the financial sector, and at improving the Financial Crisis Safety Net. The DPR has asked the President to submit the bill before January 19, 2009," she said.
The minister said the simulation had been prepared for the last two years, including in developing its procedures and mechanisms.
She said that the government and Bank Indonesia (BI) and the Deposit Guarantor Institution needed to improve the information sharing among them.***2***
