VP: ALL COAL, MINERAL EXPORTS SHOULD BE COVERED BY LCs
Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan, Dec 20 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said here on Saturday Letters of Credit (LCs) should be used in the export of coal and other mining products so that all parties concerned could control the transactions.
"In future, all coal and other mining product exports should be covered by Letters of Credit (LCs) to make it easier for all parties concerned to check whether the tax, royalty and other obligations have been met," the vice president said.
Kalla made the statement at a meeting here on the development of an iron ore mill and the expansion of coal mining activity in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan.
According to the vice president, the government had found it difficult so far to keep track of how much coal was being exported and how much tax and royalties was being paid by the exporters.
"We don't want this country's natural resources to be depleted by this mode of smuggling," Kalla said.
On the occasion Kalla also asked the Forestry Ministry to keep preserving forests by not too easily issuing mining permits to mining companies whose activties would destroy forests.
"The forestry ministry should not easily give mining permits to mining companies to destroy forests," the vice president said.
The vice president said coal exports from South Kalimantan over the past three years had tripled. ***2***
