RI-MALAYSIA EPG TO APPOINT PEACE MEDIATOR
Jakarta, Dec 21 (ANTARA) - The Indonesia-Malaysia Eminent Persons Group (EPG) has agreed to form a permanent standing committee to act as a special envoy or peace mediator in case of a dispute between the two neighboring states.
"The permanent standing committee is a special envoy of (the two countries') leaders to seek a solution to any problem arising from the relations between the two countries," EPG spokesman for Indonesia, Musni Umar, said here on Sunday.
The committee would also play a role in supervising developments in the two countries to see to it that sensitive issues could be settled amicably, he said.
The agreement was achieved at an Indonesia-Malaysia EPG meeting held here this week, he said.
"The EPG agreed to propose to leaders of each other's government to appoint noted leaders from both Indonesia and Malaysia as peace mediators in case of a problem arising from the relations between the two countries," he said.
He said the proposal would be brought to an Indonesia-Malaysia EPG meeting to be held in Putra Jaya, Malaysia, on December 22-23 for endorsement.
The EPG consists of three sections, namely recommendation, manpower and history.
The Indonesian side is represented by Quraish Shihab, chairman concurrently member, with Musni Umar, Pudentia and Wahyuni Bahar as members, while the Malaysian side is represented by Tan Sri Abdul
Halim, chairman concurrently member, with Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Mohd Zahidi Haji Zainuddin, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Hamid Bugo and Tan Sri Dr. Khoo Kay Kim as members.
The EPG which is made up of seven experts from each of the two countries was set up in mid-2008 to settle bilateral issues and enhance relations between the two peoples.
Ties between the two countries turned sour some time ago after Malaysian security personnel beat an Indonesian coach and mistakenly arrested the wife of an Indonesian education attache, and Malaysia claimed a number of Indonesian traditional arts to be theirs.
The incidents sparked protest rallies in front of the Malaysian embassy in Jakarta. ***8***
