DUBAI, 1st June 2015 (WAM) -- Brigadier Ali Al Shamali, Director of the General Department of Punitive and Correctional Establishments in Dubai, has received a delegation of the EU human rights experts, led by John O'Rourke, Head of Arabian Peninsula, Iraq and Iran at the EU External Action Service. At the outset of the meeting, Brigadier Al Shamali gave a detailed presentation on the work mechanisms and policies of the department and its programmes for rehabilitation, reform, humanitarian and medical care for inmates, consistent with international laws and universal human rights principles. Brigadier Al Shamali underscored Dubai Police's commitment to implementing the political leadership's directives to ensure good treatment of inmates, administer justice, respect and uphold human rights principles, protect rights and freedoms to practice religious rituals and ensure equality and non-discrimination on the basis of origin, ethnicity or race. Brigadier Al Shamali then took the EU delegation on a field tour of various units of the department, including the command and control room, where they viewed the e-monitoring system and other guard and security systems. At the handicraft and mechanical workshops at Dubai Central Jail, the delegation learned about the professional, cultural, educational and sports activities organised by the department, before visiting the humanitarian and medical care units. The visiting EU delegation said they were satisfied with what they discerned as proper care by the department to provide world-class social care and services to inmates. They noted that the advanced technology and systems used by the department reflect the prominent stature and good reputation of Dubai Police internationally. – Emirates News Agency, WAM - http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395281243513.html
