PT KRAKATAU TO SUPPLY 14,000 TONS OF STEEL TO PT PAL

Jakarta, Dec 22 (ANTARA) - The state-owned steel company PT Krakatau Steel will supply 14,000 tons of steel to state-owned ship-building firm PT PAL for the construction of two ships being ordered by Germany.
The agreement for steel supply between the two state-owned companies was signed here on Monday at the office of the minister for state-enterprises (BUMN).

President Director of PT PAL Harsusanto said that the company would build two Star Fifty ships with a dead wight of 50,000 tons (DWT) from Germany next year.
He said PT PAL's need for steel continued to increase from year to year in line with the increase in the number of orders for ship construction by PT PAL.
"Our need next year will be about 14,000 tons but the procurement of the need would be made in stages," he said.
He said that PT PAL now had orders for the building of 16 ships until 2012.
Every unit of ships will need some 7,000 to 8,000 tons of steel.
The dead wight tonnage of the 16 ships ranges between 22,000 to 50,000 DWT.
"The building of the two unit of ships ordered by Germany is expected to be completed in 2010," Harsusanto said.
He did not reveal the value of the steel procurement agreement but said that the price of steel at present continued to fluctuate. Now the price was recorded at US$600 per ton.
In the meantime, Marketing Director of Krakatau Steel Irvan Hakim said PT PAL would serve as a strategic partner of Krakatau Steel in the steel procurement.
"Cooperation with PAL has been running for a long time and both companies have reached a number of agreements," he said.
PT Krakatau Steel is ready to produce some 360,000 tons of steel plates annually for ship-dock yard industries, of which 25,000 tons are allocated for PT PAL.
