PRESIDENT OBSERVES MOTHER`S DAY
Jakarta, Dec. 22 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Monday observed the 80th Anniversary of the Mother's Day and officially launched the Creative Indonesian Year 2009.
The theme of this year's Mother's Day is "With th spirit of One- Decade-National Awakening, We Improve the Performance of the Indonesian Women in Building the National Character and Understanding Towards Prosperous, Democratic and Just Indonesia."
The head of state on the occasion was accompanied by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Vice President M Jusuf Kalla and Mrs. Mufidah Kalla.
Information from the women's empowerment ministry said that theme reflected the role of women as mothers and educators in families in teaching their children how to respect others, work hard, and be disciplined.
The National Mother's Day dates back from the first Congress of the Indonesian Women's Association in December 22, 1928, when the women supported the struggle for the national independence.
To highlight the Mother's Day, the government was expected to bestow awards to three Indonesian prominent women, respectively Prof. Dr. Ir. Sri Kumalaningsih from the University of Brawijaya (Malang, East Java), Iravati M Sudiarso, a world-class pianist, and Trisutji Djuliati Kamal, a noted pianist and composer.
A joint regulation on "Increasing Breast Feeding During Working Hours at Working Places " was also scheduled to be signed by the women's empowerment minister, the health minister, and the manpower and transmigration minister on the occasion.
