PRESIDENT CALLS ON MOTHERS NOT TO PANIC IN FACE OF CRISIS

Jakarta, Dec 22 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on mothers and women not to panic in the face of world economic crisis which bought impact to Indonesia's economy.

"I appeal to women and the people as a whole not to panic in the face of the world economic crisis," he said in his address to the 80the anniversary celebration of the Mother's Day at the Plenary Hall of the Jakarta Convention Center here on Monday.

The head of state said that women could contribute their efforts to the state, government and people in helping safeguard the country's economy and in maintaining momentum for economic growth.

"In this regard, I once again support the movement of women in conducting food diversification, energy saving, creative economic development and the movement for planting and growing trees," the president said.

The president said that in the face of the global financial crisis, the people's purchasing power should remain strong although the state and government's pockets might had run empty.

"The income of the business world might drop and it should be accepted but the people should not face difficulties in their day-to-day life," President Yudhoyono said.

Therefore, the women's move to develop creative economy through various small and medium-sized industries was an effective solution to creating job opportunities, increasing income and keeping the safety of economy, he said.

In line with the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Mother's Day, the president announced the Indonesia Creative Year 2009.

In connection with the announcement of the Indonesia Creative year 2009, Trade Minister Mari E Pangestu said that the development of creative economy needed quality and creative human resources.

She said that the creativity of human resources needed to be developed since early stages, beginning with education within the family where mothers played a decisive role in educating their sons and daughters.

"Mothers play a vital role in shaping creative human resources who will in turn decide the development of creative economy," the minister said.
