MINISTRY REJOINS WORLD BANK FOR ACCELERATED DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Jakarta, Dec 22 (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Accelerated Development of Disadvantaged Regions rejoined the World Bank to assist under developed and disadvantaged regions in 2009.

"The World Bank will fully support the expansion of the development acceleration program for disadvantaged regions and investment opportunities which will be carried out by the ministry and the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas)," M Zuhri, Head of public relations division of the ministry said here Monday.

The accelerated development program for disadvantaged regions which was meant for community empowerment and the recovery of social economic conditions in conflict areas were a joint cooperation of the ministry and Bappenas with the support of the World Bank through its loans.

The program has been implemented in eight provinces comprising of 32 regencies, 186 districts, and 2496 villages with a budget of 461 billion rupiah.

Besides the with World Bank, the Accelerated Development of Disadvantaged Regions Ministry also cooperated with a number of United Nations organizations namely the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and United Nations High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Land-locked Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States(UNHR-LLS).
"Initially, the organizations will invite the ministry to be involved especially in some agendas related to social gap between regions and poor countries development," Zuhri said.

As many as 40 of 199 disadvantaged regencies have developed well while 18 others have shown some progress and expected to fully develop in 2009.

According to Zuhri some obstacles facing the program were low quality of human resources, limited local natural resources management, facilities and infrastructure as well as regional characteristics.

Meanwhile in border areas the development policy are still facing problems of applying security approach and prosperity.
