WOC LISTED AS UN AGENDA IN 2009

Manado, N Sulawesi, Dec 22 (ANTARA) - The World Ocean Conference (WOC) has become one of the United Nations (UN) agendas in 2009, an official said.

The UN attention to the international event may open a chance of many more countries to take part in the event, North Sulawesi Governor Sinyo Harry Sarundajang said here on Monday.

The event which will be held on May 11-15 was only for maritime countries. However, after becoming one of the UN agendas, the event will become more open to other participants.

The WOC is getting more interesting to countries in the world to discuss further and more concretely the impact of climate change on the sea or the maritime resources and also on saving the earth from global warming.

Besides hosting the WOC, Manado will also hold the Coral Triangle Initiative on May 15, 2009 which will be attended by six heads of government from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Timor leste, Salomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.

Besides the six countries, two partner countries as donor will also join the event--the United States and Australia as well as some international non-governmental organizations.

Sarundajang said some preparations have been made to make the events a success.

Some three thousand domestic and foreign participants --officials, academicians and NGOs -- will take part in both events.
