INFRASTRUCTURE FOR SUKHOI JET FIGHTERS PREPARED, AIRFORCE CHIEF SAYS
Jakarta, Dec 23 (ANTARA)- Air Force chief of Staff, Marshall Subandrio said all the infrastructure facilities for the arrival of another three new Russian-made Sukhoi jet-fighters have been prepared.
"All the infrastructure like a hangar, pilots and technicians have been prepared. We are happy if the three Sukhois can be sent immediately," he said on the sidelines of a closing ceremony of a military-police anti-terror joint exercise here Monday.
The new Sukhoi jet-fighters were scheduled to arrive here before the end of the year, he said, adding that the jet-fighters will be assembled at Sultan Hasanuddin airbase in Makassar, South Sulawesi province.
Previously, Defense Equipment Director General Rear Marshall Eris Harryanto said that the three Sukhois would arrive in stages, two this month and one in January 2009.
"The three warplanes are of the SU-30MK2 type. The Indonesian Air Force needs this type," Harryanto, who has just returned from Russia to witness the roll-out of two Sukhois, said.
He said that the procurement of the three jet-planes would soon be followed with the procurement of armaments needed by the Indonesian Air Force. "Thus the operational preparedness of the Air Force, particularly the Sukhoi squadron, would ber increased soon," he added.
The Russian Sukhoi producing company on August 21, 2007, announced the sale of six jet fighters to Indonesia worth US$300 million.
The six Sukhois consisted of three SU-30MK2 Sukhois and three of the SU-27SKM type. They will reinforce the Air Force's Sukhoi fleet it already has since September 2003.
The memorandum of understanding on the purchase of the six Sukhois was signed on August 21, 2007. They will replace A-4 Skyhawks based in Air Squadron 11, in Makassar's (South Sulawesi) Sultan Hasanuddin airbase.
The purchase of the Russian Sukhois has been planned under the Air Force's Fleet Development Program for the 2005-2009 period.
In the 2005 budget year, US$310 million had been allocated for the procurement of the six Sukhois in stages in the 2007-2009 period.
