VP CALLS ON KADIN TO STEP UP SENSE OF NATIONALISM

Jakarta, Dec 23 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has called on business players grouped in the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) to step up their sense of nationalism by starting to use national products.

"Wearing shoes of national products can also improve the sense of nationalism. Therefore, starting from now on make yourselves accustomed to wearing locally-made shoes," the vice president told the business players in a function to close the 5th national congress of KADIN here on Monday.

Kalla said if the businessmen and all people in Indonesia started wearing locally-made shoes, it would help boost the national shoe industry.

He also pointed out that the people should start wearing batik instead of coat.

The vice president said that in the coming years the people of Indonesia should gradually stop wearing coat as formal attire and replace it with batik.

"President Yudhoyono and I have started wearing batik instead of coat, and as the result the national batik industry is now getting better," Kalla said.

He added that batik at present had become a national pride, and therefore he promised to wear batik all the time, except in three occasions.

The vice president said he would wear coat in three occasions only, namely in a meeting with foreign heads of state/government, in a wedding party, and in a special Lebaran day with President Yudhoyono.

On the occasion the vice president also said the government would
continue to lower subsidy rate in the state budget (APBN) in an effort to improve the Indonesian economic development.

"We are going to lower the subsidy rate to the lowest level possible so that the national economic development can run well," Kalla said.

He added that if the subsidy rate was reduced, it would not be a burden to APBN but it would be used for the national economic development.

Therefore, he said the government would continue to lower the subsidy rate through technology and conversion.
