YEAR-END TRAVELLERS TO REACH 5.79 MILLION, OFFICIAL SAYS
Jakarta, Dec 22 (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Transportation estimated that the number of year-end travellers from Jakarta to several destinations such as Central Java, East java, and other parts of the country during Christmas and New Year's holidays would reach 5.79 millions.
Minister of transportation, Jusman Syafii Djamal, said here Monday that the number had inreased compared to last year's 5.79 millions.
"The number of passengers will increase as of December 23, 2008, to January 6, 2009," he said when addressing transportation coordination during Christmas and New Year.
Among transportation means, he said, that land transportation was still a favorite with the 2.01 million travellers followed by railway transportation with 1.73 million, air transport 1.54 million, and by sea 499,916 people.
The minister also added that the number of passengers using each of the transportation means increased compared to last year's.
Moreover, Jusman stated that the peak seasons for each means of transportationis different.
Land transportation would reach a peak on December 24, sea transportation on December 21 to 23, air transportation on December 24 to 31, while rail transportation on December 25.
Meanwhile, he said, the peak date of travellers returning from their hometowns is also different. The peak of land transportation users would be on January 4, 2009, sea transportation on January 3 to 4, air transportation on January 4, while train users on January 1, 2009.
