100-km Indo-Pak border in Gujarat remains unfenced

New Delhi, Dec 26 (PTI) There may be heightened vigil against infiltration by terrorists from across the border, but a 100-km stretch along the frontier in India's western state of Gujarat still remains in dark at night and without any physical barrier in place.

Indian government has approved the construction of
fencing and installation of floodlights along 310 kms of the
508 km-long International Border in Gujarat.

However, fencing has been completed in only 217 km and
floodlighting has been done along 202 km.

"Fencing in 93 km and floodlighting in 108 km along
the sensitive borders in Gujarat remain to be completed," a
Home Ministry official said.

Following the last month's Mumbai terror attacks by
Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, there have been reports of
terrorists and anti-social elements trying to sneak into the
country from across the border.

"It is more worrying for us with the fact that the
Pakistan Rangers have augmented their personnel in Border Out
Posts and there have been increased activities by the Rangers
following the Mumbai terror attack," the official said.

In Punjab, of the 553 km border with Pakistan,
fencing and floodlighting had been sanctioned for 461 km and
all works have been completed.

Of the 1,037 km border in Rajasthan, the government
has approved fencing for 1056.63 km and work is left only
along eight kms.

Fencing has been approved for 180 km-long stretch of
the 210 km-long International border in Jammu sector and work
has been completed.

The floodlighting has been sanctioned for 195 km
border in Jammu while work has been completed along 176 km.

The situation along the Indo-Bangla border is no
better as the government has given sanction for the
construction of fencing only along 3,286 km the 4,096 km-long
international border between the two countries.

Of the sanctioned work, fencing has been completed only
in 2,612 km.

In West Bengal, which has 2,217 km-long border,
fencing has been completed only in 1,190 km while in Assam
fencing has been completed in 201 km of the 263 km border.

In Meghalaya, of the 443 km border, fencing has been
completed along 378 km, in Tripura, of 856 km, fencing has
been completed along 696 km and in Mizoram, of 318 km,
fencing has been completed in just 145 km.

"Flood lighting in a 277-km stretch in West Bengal was
completed as pilot project. Decision has been taken of
floodlighting 2,840 km of this border at a cost of Rs 1,327
crore and work is likely to start shortly," the official said.
