RI TO COOPERATE WITH PNG IN COFFEE PLANT DISEASE ERADICATION
Jakarta, Dec 26 (ANTARA) - Indonesia will coperate with Papua New Guinea in the eradication of the coffee berry borers (CBB) in the two neighbouring countries.
The agriculture ministry's directorate of plantation protection said in a statement here on Friday the cooperation would be carried out from 2009 to 2012.
The plan has been discussed in an "Incursion Prevention and Management of Coffee Berry Borers in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea" meeting in Goroka, Papua New Guinea, early this month, attended by delegations from Indonesia, PNG and CABI (international non-governmental organization dealing with agriculture).
The cooperation will be started in March/April with a survey on CBB attack in the two countries' border areas.
It will then be continued with strengthening the CBB information center and training on CBB identification for taxonomists in Indonesia and PNG.
In June 2009 an integrated plant disease control would be carried out through human resources development including coffee plant disease control training in PNG (October 2011) and in Indonesia (November 2011).
Plot demonstrations will also be carried out in PNG in 2012 and in Indonesia including in Tanah Toraja and Enrekang districts in Sulawesi and Wamena in Papua in 2012.
Other activities include training for trainers which is to be carried out by the Cacao and Coffee Research Center in Jember, East Java, in June 2009.
CABI also plans to conduct coordination and arrange the curriculum for and evaluate the implementation of the training program.
The cooperation will be funded by the Australian governemnt and hopefully supported by the governments of Indonesia and PNG through their national budgets.
