WILD ELEPHANTS AGAIN SCARE RESIDENTS OF ACEH JAYA

Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Dec. 27 (ANTARA) - Three wild elephants have approached Cot Pangee village, Sampiniet sub district, Aceh Jaja District, and scared hundreds of local residents since Wednesday (Dec. 24).

The three wild animal were often spotted by local villages in the local farmers' agricultural and plantation areas, Ridwan Adnan and Syamsuddin, inhabitants of Cot Pangee, Aceh Jaya, said here on Saturday.

The Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and the Flora and Fauna International (FFI) had chased away a herd of wild elephants from the village few weeks ago, with the help of four tamed elephants. However, it seemed that some of the elephants came out from their forest habitat again.

"The residents of Cot Pangee are afraid because the elephants often look for food near the human settlement area in the evening," Syamsuddin said.

Recently, 13 wild elephants had encroached the human settlement area in Cot Pangee, but they had later chased away by four tamed elephants of the Saree Elephant Training Center, he said.

According to Saymsuddin, the Cot Pangee residents hoped that BKSDA and FFI could again help them chase away the wild elephants.

"We hope that the elephants will not only be driven away, but be captured so that they will never come back," Syamsuddin said.

Many residents of Cot Pangee village had fled their homes in fear of the 13 wild elephants that had invaded their area. The herd of elephants had killed one person and destroyed a farmer's house last November.

Because of the elephant attacks, many Cot Pangee residents had become afraid to stay in their homes and decided to evacuate to safer places. But some worried traditional farmers in the village had threatened to poison the elephants if the authorities fail to solve the problem.
